After spending most of the day trying to learn the tricks of UV mapping I think I've finally managed to grasp some kind of basic understanding of it. I found a tutorial which suggested applying a checker material to your object as it will help with the UV mapping process, and it definitely did help. This way you can keep track of how the checker pattern is reacting to the UV projections being created. If the squares are nice and neat then you should be on your way to applying a good texture and also a good wrap.
Next step import it into Photoshop and get some colours on there.
